Memmingen Tourist Attractions

Memmingen’s city center revives the old historical town of the Roman Empire with its many courtyards, castles, and patrician houses, along with palaces and other stronghold structures. These are among the best landmarks preserved in South Germany.

Order of St. Anthony and Strigel Museum (Antonierhaus)

The Order of St. Anthony and Strigel Museum, also known as Antonierhaus, is a new museum in Memmingen town that opened in 1996.

It is a 15th-century complex house with living quarters for the Hospitallers of St. Anthony and their hospital.

The Hospitaller Department focuses on diseases, cures, and medieval charity, as well as the general history of the organization, the history of the house in Memmingen, and the order's economic structure.

According to the findings from excavations in the Antonierhaus, there are illustrations of the day-to-day life of patients and the religious. Visitors can also watch a film to learn deeper about the Order of the Hospitallers of St. Antony in Memmingen.

The second section of the museum shows works by the painter Bernhard Strigel, the most famous offspring of a Memmingen artist family. Some of the sculptures and paintings by other family members and their contemporaries complement the recent Gothic collection.

Bernhard Strigel is a well-known portrait and altar painter, followed by an account of fellow artists.

The museum is open every Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 NN and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. They are also available during public holidays every Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

St. Martin Church in Memmingen

St. Martin or Sankt Martin church in Memmingen is one of the century-old churches in the Upper portion of Swabia. The church is one of the city's famous historical landmarks, located in the northwestern old town, in front of the old abandoned cemetery. Its tower can be seen from afar and, at around 65 meters, is the tallest building in the city.

The three-aisled basilica began its present form around 1325 and completed its structure in 1500. The basilica was supported and financed by the citizens of Memmingen. At that time, it was the most prominent Gothic town church between Lake Constance and Lech.

It houses many artworks, including the over 500-year-old choir stalls, among southern German's best and most recent Gothic carvings. It is known to be Memmingen’s most significant art treasure.

Thousands of guests visit the historic building that characterizes Memmingen's cityscape every year.

Various guided tours have been coming to the church to give visitors a profound and comprehensive history of St. Martin and its unique features, adding to church services and concerts.

Kronburg Castle

City Museum Memmingen

Immerse yourself into the historical background of Memmingen as you enter the old baroque city palace now known as the city’s museum.

Create in your mind a lively view of the past on how a free imperial city opened up, with exhibits on everyday life, the work of the merchants, the guilds, and the old churches.

The museum also depicts Jewish life up to its destruction by the Nazi regime. Historical and artistic highlights of the tour are the gallery with creative paintings by the baroque painter Johann Heiß, born in the city, and earthenware from the Künersberg factory.

The magnificent building was built by a businessman, Benedikt von Herman, in 1766. It was constructed with finely structured facades, a baroque-designed staircase, and a beautiful courtyard in remembrance of a Southern palace.

The City Museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays and on holidays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free.

The Bauernhof Museum/Swabian Farm Museum Illerbeuren

The Swabian Farm Museum Illerbeuren is an open-air/outdoor museum located in the administrative district of Swabia, extending from the south of Oberstdorf to the North of Nordlingen.

This outdoor museum occupies about 50 or 20 hectares of land, featuring more than 30 historic structures, including corrals, houses, stables, and commercial and government-owned buildings.

Visitors are recommended to come early, especially those planning to stay for a couple of hours.
