Memmingen Airport
Am Flughafen 42, 87766 Memmingerberg, GermanyFacts and History about Memmingen Airport
Memmingen Airport (IATA: FMM, ICAO: EDJA), also known as Allgäu Airport, is a public international airport located in the town of Memmingerberg, about 5km southeast of Memmingen City, the third-largest city in Swabia region of Bavaria.
Memmingen International Airport is the smallest of the three commercial airports in the state, after Munich Airport and Nuremberg Airport, and has the highest altitude of any commercial airport in Germany. It has a land area of 207 hectares with an elevation of 2,077 feet or 633 meters Above Mean Sea Level (AMSL).
The airport is owned and managed by Flughafen Memmingen GmbH (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung), a legal entity with limited liability in partnership with primarily local, medium-sized companies and public shares.
Memmingen Airport has located about 4km from the center of Memmingen and 110 km from the city center of Munich. The airport serves Memmingen and the Allgäu region providing low-cost carriers alternative to Munich Airport, sometimes referred to as Memmingen/Munich-West Airport.
The airport serves as a Ryanair hub and features flights to European leisure and some metropolitan destinations.
The facility has one passenger terminal building equipped with ten check-in counters and eight departure gates for Schengen and non-Schengen flights.
The building has no aircraft bridges. Therefore, passengers must walk up the aircraft stairs or ride a bus to their respective airlines. Concessions such as shops, restaurants, food hubs, car rentals, and other facilities are also available at the airport. The terminal has a capacity of two million passengers per year.
In October 2021, a significant expansion took place in the main terminal of Memmingen Airport following the inauguration of its arrivals hall and baggage claim area.
Memmingen Airport has an Instrument Landing System (ILS) Category 1 for runway 24 that is equipped with a Non-Directional Beacon radio transmitter (NDB) and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME). It also features a Global Positioning System Area Navigation (GPS RNAV).
Initially, the runway was only 30 meters or 98 feet wide with narrow taxiways due to its former utilization as a facility for combat aircraft. However, in 2016, the airport administration approved its major expansion to achieve the international standard of 45 meters or 148 feet in width, completed in September 2019.
At the same time, the runway was fitted with new LED lighting while an upgrade of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) for direction 06 is still ongoing.
Two small-scale structures adjacent to the terminal provide parking spaces for six mid-sized aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, along with some smaller business jets. An additional smaller apron for general aviation aircraft is located on the other side of the runway.
History of Memmingen Airport
In 1935, amidst World War II, a military airfield was built in Memmingerberg. It was rebuilt for US Air Force training flights beginning in 1956.
From 1959 to 2003, it became the German Air Force’s headquarters for its fighter-bomber wing aircraft 34, “Allgau.”
On July 20, 2004, the facility was officially recognized as a regional commercial airport and started its operation on August 5 of the same year without any regular schedule for chartered flights.
The airport’s supposedly scheduled flights to the 2005 Hanover Fair were canceled due to a lack of demand.
In June 2005, the district of Oberallgäu granted initial finance of €480,000. On September 25, 2005, the city approved a further sum of €200,000 after a popular vote.
In 2006, scheduled flights to Dortmund and Rostock Airport were planned but eventually canceled because the carrier couldn’t pay its debt to the facility. In autumn of the same year, Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter, currently operating as German Airways, offered chartered flights to Dortmund for two months which only carried 100 passengers.
In March 2007, the European Commission approved a subsidy of €7,500,000 pledged by the Bavarian government.
On 28 June 2007, TUIfly, now known as TUIfly Deutschland Airline, started offering domestic flights to Berlin, Hamburg, and Cologne, including flights to holiday destinations such as Palma de Mallorca Heraklion, Naples, Rome, Venice, and Antalya.
On the 25th of September 2008, the airstrip was known as Allgäu Airport/Memmingen.
In March 2009, Ryanair announced seven new routes serving Memmingen starting May 2009.
Ryanair has continued to announce new routes, and in May 2010, the said airline carrier started its operation on 14 streets to and from Memmingen. Wizz Air, a Hungarian ultra-low-cost carrier, also started serving Memmingen. Since then, it has established eight routes for inbound and outbound travelers to Memmingen.
On October 24, 2013, Ryanair announced a new seasonal service to and from Shannon in Ireland.
In the summer of 2015, Palermo in Sicily, Italy, was added to Ryanair’s list of destinations. In the same season and year, Wizz Air also announced that it would expand its services in the cities of Tuzla in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bulgarian city of Sofia, and the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
On 5 June 2014, Memmingen Airport welcomed its five millionth passengers.
In December 2014, InterSky, an Austrian airline in Bregenz, announced that it would take over the domestic flights from Memmingen to Berlin and Hamburg by March 1, 2015, following Germanwings’ announcement that it would cease the same services.
In October 2015, InterSky had its first appearance in Memmingen Airport, consisting of one aircraft. The carrier also added a new route to Cologne and increased its frequencies on the existing services to Berlin and Hamburg. However, on November 6, 2015, InterSky ceased all its operations due to financial constraints, leaving Memmingen without any domestic connections.
In March 2017, Ryanair announced plans to establish its second Bavarian base in Memmingen from October 2017, consisting of one aircraft with seven additional routes.
Since March 31, 2019, another Ryanair aircraft has been stationed in Memmingen, which led to the airport administration’s abrupt decision to increase the additional workforce to 70 employees.
In December 2017, Memmingen Airport received its safety certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency.
In August 2018, the airport announced the schedule for its planned expansion, which took place from September of the same year until 2020. The runway was widened, and its guidance and lighting system were upgraded. The luggage area also added major extension facilities.
On December 6, 2018, Memmingen Airport welcomed the ten-millionth passenger.
In early 2019 the projected expansion works for the facility began. The runway and handling facilities were expanded and refurbished, then inaugurated on October 1, 2019.
